Michael and I had organised a camping trip in Newstead for the long weekend and planned to ride. I'd discussed geohashing with Michael before, and he hadn't responded “What’s the point?”, so I figured I had a decent chance of convincing him to detour if it didn't add too much distance to the route.

Well, it couldn't have been much better located. It did require a reroute, but added very little distance. Michael was on his large cargo bike but without his kids, who he had plans of collecting in Castlemaine for the last leg of the trip into Newstead. We rode straight along the beautiful Sedgwick Road, which I'd avoided on the bike because I thought it was too busy with fast cars and without sufficient shoulder. We crossed paths with several roadies out for their Saturday morning ride, and it was generally much better than I expected except for the few kilometres after the North Harcourt Road, which were exactly as nerve racking as I'd imagined.

After reaching Sutton Grange, it was a fairly trivial ride to the hash, where we took the requisite selfies, ate a banana, then headed on to Castlemaine. A great start to a great weekend.
