Expedition

Not everything went as planned. I rode almost to the hash in perfectly agreeable conditions. Not too much traffic in the town, soon enough on a peaceful path along the river Hunte that was frequented by cyclists, pedestrians, and sheep. The weather was nice as well. But when I was in the middle of the flood plains, I reached a dead end where the map clearly shows a dashed line. I was willing to continue on unpaved, gravelly, sandy, or muddy tracks, but not through waist-high vegetation and fences.

I even tried another path that was not encouraged by the map, but eventually I had to take the main road for a few kilometers until there was a smaller street where bicycles were not explicitly prohibited (cars and motorcycles were). To the left of this street, some small derelict buildings and a wasteland scenery of several heaps of old tires, fence posts, paving stones, plastic. To the right, cow pasture. When I reached the bridge next to the site of the hash, what a relief: not only was this meadow unoccupied but the gate was wide open and I felt invited to walk the last 90 m diagonally across the grass and flowers. Without any problems I reached the spot, but not in time for an official saturday meetup.

Despite the occasional bangs from a nearby hunting party, it was very peaceful at the site and I lingered around, watching birds and longing for a decent camera.

Because my next appointment would be in the northern part of Oldenburg and there was some time to kill, I decided to take a roundabout route along the network of cycling paths, and to give the coffee in https://www.melkhus-fuchsberg.de/ a try. It was agreeable, too. Perhaps I will continue sampling these locations (there are more than 70 in Lower Saxony) while geohashing...
