I started out before 07:00 from München Hbf. on the train to Fischen. On arriving, I had 45 minutes to kill. I got a warm croissant and wandered around near the river. Fischen has fantastic views of the Alps from the foothills, and it gave a definite pastoral flavor to my Pfingstmontag.

I then hopped on the bus to Balderschwang which involved a detour, narrow streets, tight corners, and several hundreds of meters of elevation gain – in short it was an exciting bus ride. So exciting, in fact, that I missed pushing the button for my stop, and I had to walk two kilometers back from the next stop. On the road from Fischen, there were signs warning that this was a motorcycle crash stretch, and it was evident why. Packs of motorcycles raced through the mountain pass at speeds which would be illegal even in Texas before turning around as soon as they reached the other end to do it all again. In the twenty minutes I walked next to the road, I counted 56 motorcycles, 54 cars, and nine hardy bicyclists.

Eventually, I turned uphill into an alpine pasture, haunted by the incessant melody of cowbells. Eventually I had to leave the gravel path and descend to the Scheuenbach, where the hash was. Uncertain about my prospects further down the bend, I took the physically shortest path, which involved scooting and sliding down a muddy, leafy, and mossy hillside. Having survived without injury, I forged my way to the stream and the hash point.

On the way back, I opted to return to the path further along, and avoided a dangerous ascent. The next bus was in a while, so I climbed up to the Scheuen Fall and ate lunch at Alpe Scheuen. From there, the bus and train took me back home.
