Expedition

Deutsche Bahn is currently running a promotion (GER), allowing for unlimited travel on their long distance trains over 44 hours for 44€ on the weekends. I thought I could combine this with some geohashes further away from my current home of Emden. This lead me to a forest by Neumünster, a throwback to my second ever expedition.

I left Emden at 16:16, on the IC to Leipzig, taking it only to Bremen. You might note that this is before the 44€-Ticket is valid, as that only starts at 18:00 each Friday. The trick here is that the IC trains northwest of Bremen can be used with regional train tickets to allow for hourly service between Bremen and Emden (and usually Norddeich).

In Bremen I changed onto ICE 108, which was delayed enough to make me miss my connection in Hamburg. The delay kept increasing, having me going through many alternative options until eventually settling on consuming some fried noodles in Hamburg and then setting off to Bad Oldeslohe, from where a battery electric train brought me to Neumünster-Süd. Had I gotten my original connection in Hamburg I could have still caught a bus in Neumünster, cutting the walk to the hash short by a few kilometers. This was no longer possible, and so I set off on foot, taking the shortest route, in hopes that I would be able to catch one of the last trains from Neumünster-Süd to Neumünster.

As usual, I managed to unercut the estimate of OsmAnd by quite a bit, leaving the rural road without a sidewalk sometime around 22:30 instead of 22:50. While I had initially worried that the undergrowth might be too dense to make quick progress, this turned out not to be an issue, whith the lack of light caused by the dense foliage having more of an effect.

When reading reports I often find that the time spent at the hash is covered in only a sentence or two, making it easy to miss for the less than diligent reader. This hash is one of those. I arrived, walked in a triangle, took two pictures and swiftly departed again.

The original estimate for reaching Neumünster-Süd was 00:10, early enough for the last train towards Neumünster main station, though I wanted to try taking the one leaving at 23:59, as that one is an AKN train, which I haven't been on before. Twenty minutes I managed to make good on the estimate, and so I got to experience the novel but not particularly comfortable interior of the modern AKN DMUs.

The day ended on this train, I still don't know what hash I am headed to while writing this. I would like to take some more time though, before heading back to Emden.
