TLDR: I stayed here overnight and went to the Geohashing Day Meetup one graticule over in the morning.
Since Sunday was the 15th Geohashing Day, there was a big German meetup planned, and the Hannover graticule had been democratically chosen for the gathering. To make the most out of the weekend, I decided to already travel to Lower Saxony on Friday for a cycling & sightseeing trip. On Friday, I visited Braunschweig (Brunswick) as well as Bad Harzburg and its castle, which might not have been a great idea, since I had to climb up to it even tough I was still recovering from a sprained ankle. In the evening, I cycled into the Harz (the highest central German mountain range) and tried to find a suitable camping spot, which I eventually found far along a forest road winding up the slopes. Following the announcement of the weekend's geohashes, it was decided to relocate the meetup to the Braunschweig graticule since that hash was more accessible (in fact, it lay right on a path).
On Saturday, I planned to cycle through the Harz, but turned back after only a third of the way due to unwise spontaneous decisions and overfull buses. Instead, I visited the city of Goslar with its picturesque half-timbered houses and the Kaiserpfalz (Imperial Palace, an important castle of the early Holy Roman Emperors). After visiting all the main sights including the castle and the highest church tower, I cycled to the Rammelsberg mine, which together with the city is classified as a World Heritage site (one of the few in Germany I had not yet visited). To my surprise, I was able to visit much of the mine's area, including several exhibitions, without a ticket, and only left when they started closing. During the day, I had decided not to visit Göttingen as I had originally planned, but to spend the night near 2023-05-21 52 9, the original meetup location, reach it early on Sunday and then continue to the actual meetup.
From Goslar, I took the train to Hannover, where I made a brief trip to the city hall and the Maschsee before hurrying back to the station. Afterward, I continued to Lindwedel station, from where I cycled 7.6 km to Vesbeck in perfect weather along tiny paths between the countless fields, watching the last daylight dwindle. I arrived near the hash, which was located right on the far edge of a crop field, hid my bike surprisingly effectively in some tall grass and made my way along the edge of the field. My ankle did not like the uneven and hole-filled ground at all, but I made it to the far edge and found a dry ditch that was just wide enough for my sleeping mat. I made my bed not even five metres from the hash, knowing I'd be shielded from view even if someone decided to work on the fields in the morning. I located the hash around half a metre into the field. Not a great location for the meetup, but at least I didn't have to venture into the crops.
I spent a somewhat uneasy night and rose early, once again climbed up to the hash, packed my stuff and cycled back to the station, this time along streets. For the continuation of my trip, see 2023-05-21 52 10.
