About
This hash point lies smack in the middle of the northern part of the Palm Beach, Florida graticule. It's about 6 miles east of Lake Okeechobee and a few miles south of some orange groves. Based on the picture from Google Maps, it looks to be in the middle of swampland.
Expeditions
Rozard
This was my first attempt at a geohash, and though unsuccessful, it was fun and a learning experience. I checked this morning to see where today's hash coordinates were, and I figured they were close enough to me that I could try to reach it with a friend before we had to go to work. We left around 11am and drove along Bee Line Highway to reach SR-76, then drive down a dirt road past/through the orange groves to reach the hash point.
After reaching the groves, we looked for a path that would take us south to where the hash mark was, but the trail closest to the hash was either locked off, or we didn't find it. There was a second trail we tried to take which wasn't locked, but as we started down it, there were signs warning not to enter and that the area was a Citrus Canker Quarantine Zone. Not wanting to pioneer a HAZMAT achievement, I snapped some pictures of the area, the signs and our coordinates, then went back home.
Since there are few actual roads out there, I didn't have a good plan for getting to the hash point other than the Bee Line Highway. After getting home and checking the map again, I saw that I could have continued past the orange groves and turned south down a road bordering Lake Okeechobee. From there I could have hopped on another road that could have taken me as close as 2.5 miles to the hash without trekking out to it. As it is, we only came within 6 miles of the hash. Due to time constraints, we didn't want to try any other routes. It's probably better that we didn't, because as we left it began to rain.
