If they were used for grazing, there probably would be some sort of fencing around them to keep the creatures that were grazing to your own fields and out of the fields of others. It is possible that the plants growing in the field were the crop. As in, they might have been, say, a clover field, which was cut for drying for the winter, but then left to continue to grow and fix nitrogen for future crops.
