Expedition

This expedition is part 4 of a mo-mo-monsterhash done on the way home from the big 2009-08-29 52 13 meetup, and was on day 3 of a 3-day consecutive geohash:

  • Day 1:

  2. 2009-08-28 50 11
  3. 2009-08-28 51 11
  4. 2009-08-28 52 12
  • Day 2:

  • Day 3:

Back from our short detour to the Czech Republic we had to follow a country road (and many different slow drivers) for a while until we finally reached the Autobahn A70 and soon after the exit to the hashpoint. In the last village before Buchau we found a road block. Danatar turned into the next side street and asked two kids for directions around the road block. They answered "just take the next street to the right". In the same moment the navigation system finished calculating and announced "next turn right". Okay, then we should take that one. In Buchau we stopped next to the property where the hashpoint should be and wondered what to do next, for the structure visible in google's satellite view turned out to be a garage.

When we got out of the car a woman was standing in front of the house and looking at them. Danatar put on his most friendly face and went to talk to her. "Hello! This might sound strange, but we're here because of an adventure game..." To which the woman replied "oh yes, I've heard about that, it's where you have to find things..." Danatar quickly confirmed the existence of geocaching and told her that we were there because of something different, then did a short introduction to geohashing, "nothing special is hidden there, only a spot, and it might be behind your garage". She agreed to let us walk around her garage and came with us. While walking to the spot she suggested that our spot might be the (I don't remember what) behind her property, but Danatar insisted that we were not looking for any special building and that our spot was only 10 metres away near the stacks of wood. thepiguy quickly found the spot and put his GPS device on a cornerstone so he could take a picture. "Oh, so the spot is our cornerstone?" Danatar agreed that within the accuracy of the GPS the cornerstone would be the best place for the hashpoint and continued to do small talk. thepiguy and srs0 continued to protect their secret Canadian identity by looking friendly and not saying anything.

The woman (Mrs. K.) asked if we were coming from Bamberg for this spot and Danatar told here that we were on our way from Berlin to Würzburg and that this spot was just conveniently close to our route. He didn't tell her about the other four hashpoints... She then told him which route to take to get to the Autobahn. Mrs. K. told us that there is a geocache nearby and that she sometimes sees people searching for it, so when she had seen us there with GPS devices in our hands she had assumed we were doing the same. She then agreed to have her picture taken with the hashpoint and to take one for us as well. Not long after that we thanked her very much and returned to the car. We decided not to look for that geocache because we didn't want to stress both the locals' hospitality and our timetable, so we drove along a nice route back to the Autobahn, then to 50 10.
