Expedition

Danatar, thepiguy, srs0

This expedition is part 3 of a monsterhash done on the way home from the big 2009-08-29 52 13 meetup, and was on day 3 of a 3-day consecutive geohash:

  • Day 1:
  1. 2009-08-28 49 10
  2. 2009-08-28 50 11
  3. 2009-08-28 51 11
  4. 2009-08-28 52 12
  • Day 2:
  1. 2009-08-29 52 13
  • Day 3:
  1. 2009-08-30 51 13
  2. 2009-08-30 51 12
  3. 2009-08-30 50 12
  4. 2009-08-30 50 11
  5. 2009-08-30 50 10

After leaving the 51 12 geohash, the three headed back to the autobahn and went south. Upon re-entering Bavaria, they made a quick stop. Thepiguy, appreciative of Danatar's driving, bought Danatar coffee and a large bottle of coke so he could keep going. Yay caffeine! Now that the driver was refueled, the three continued towards the next hashpoint. Not much else happened on the way to the border, excluding a fascinating discussion on language and Danatar's explanation for why English has such a simple form of verb conjugation, which was really interesting!

Upon reaching the border, srs0 was shocked to see that the border was completely open. There was just a sign saying you're now entering the Czech Republic, that's it! A short distance later there was an actual border gate and all, but it clearly hadn't been used in a long time, and was a remnant from before the European Union. Srs0 tried to get a good picture of the welcome sign, but he had his camera on the wrong settings for a clear shot, and as such only has some blurry pictures. Subsequent attempts on the way back were through the back windshield, and as such also weren't as clear as he'd like.

After crossing the border, Danatar took note of the new speed limits in effect, and promptly forgot them several times. Thankfully, they didn't need to go too far inside the country. After a short drive, they reached their turnoff. A man sat at the corner and watched them with a look of complete disinterest as they turned onto the old dirt road, and shortly thereafter they were at the field the geohash was in. They got out of the car and once again were glad that the hashfield was already harvested.

A bit into the field, srs0 suddenly asked "why is there a control tower over there?" It looks like there were more remnants from before the EU than just an old border gate. They continued through the field, and soon enough were at the hashpoint, which commanded a beautiful view of the countryside and the lake below them. After taking numerous pictures, they headed back towards the car.

After a bit of confusion regarding getting back to the main road, they were once again back in Germany and on their way towards 50 12.
