This is a long list of regions with their subdivisions, ordered by country. Within the country there can be further subdivisions of any size. Please add your own regions and subdivisions (in a logical way!) if you think there might be somebody else who would want to use them.

The goal of this list is that not everybody has to type the same lists by hand. You can just copy the text to your own userpage. Some people then link each subdivision to an expedition done in that subdivision, making it easy to see which subdivisions have been successfully reached (example).

Australia

(I planned to list the states as the biggest subdivisions but then I learned about internal and external territories. Now I'm confused and I think somebody local should do it.)

France

France is constituted of:

  • 13 metropolitan regions: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Bretagne, Centre-Val de Loire, Corse, Grand Est, Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, Normandy, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, Pays de la Loire, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

  • 1 special status uninhabited island: Île Clipperton

France had 22 metropolitan regions, until 1 January 2016, when 16 former regions were merged together and replaced by 7 new regions. Those former regions no longer have any administrative function (with the exception of the Alsace region), though they still serve as France's NUTS 2 regions.

The administrative division of Germany goes: (Bundes-)land/state - (sometimes: Regierungsbezirk) - (Land-)kreis/district - (sometimes: Gemeindeverband/collective municipality) - Gemeinde/municipality

4 of the 16 German states (Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Hessen, Nordrhein-Westfalen) have an additional administrative level called Regierungsbezirke ("governmental districts") between the state and district level. In 2 states (Berlin, Hamburg) the state level is identical to the district level.
