Note safety orange geohashing hat, placed on Christmas list after encounter with hunters on Expedition 2. My family is awesome.

Me

I live in the Portland, Oregon graticule. As of May 2022, I have launched 251 Expeditions, reaching the hashpoint 209 times. I've set out in 70 graticules, and reached the hashpoint in 60 of them. I've gone geohashing in:

  • 33 of Oregon's 36 counties (31 with successes).
  • 19 of the 50 U.S. states (17 with successes).
  • Canada, twice, but failed both times.
  • 128 expeditions within my home graticule (with 111 successes).

I like keeping track of the adventures in:

I aspire to the Graticule Hopper Achievement, but still have 30 graticules to go.

I never met another geohasher at a hashpoint until my 158th Expedition. I've never met another geohasher that I didn't already know from non-geohashing life, although there have been close calls, and on several occasions I have found or left evidence for other hashers.

2016 and 2017 Expeditions

As far as I can remember, there weren't any.

Before I gave up geohashing for good for the second time, my record-keeping tailed off for about a year and a half. In November 2018, I rediscovered expeditions 185-197, which had not been listed on this page. Expeditions 187 and 188 had never even been written up at the time, but were recoverable from old emails.

If there was any geohashing during the 1008 days between November 22, 2015 and August 26, 2018, I haven't remembered it yet.

Staff and Enablers

Mrs.5000 and Other Core Staff

Mrs.5000, my helpmeet and lead co-adventurer, is an architect, bricoleur, and book artist of no little reknown. She is thought to prefer expeditions in which there is some secondary payoff, such as exercise, attractive scenery, or burritos, but she is as game for a random road trip as the next person. As of March 2022, she is the 69th greatest geohasher in the world.

The Nieces are of course all mad for geohashing. My favorite niece is, by rule, the one who most recently went geohashing with me.

  • Niece #1 joined us for doomed Expedition #4, was a brilliant puppet for Expedition #15a, and was along for Expedition #105.
  • Niece #2 joined us for Expeditions #94 and #105.
  • Niece #3 jumped in for Expedition #115.
  • Niece #4 was coerced along for Expeditions #112, #114, and #115, and was gung-ho for #153, and went for one of her own: 2014-04-20 48 -122.

Frogman, along with Benture, Alison, Kate, Leah, and Daisy, are close allies in our geohashing and other endeavors.

  • Kate was a intrepid puppet for Expedition #75.
  • Frogman and Alison abducted me for Expedition #143. They totally abducted me! Although, to be fair, I didn't put up much of a fight.
  • Frogman joined me for Expeditions #145 & #169.
  • I encountered Benture and Leah at Expedition #158.

The fabulous and frighteningly talented Robyn is the human who introduced me to the pursuit; she is my geohashing hero and geohashing spiritual counselor.

Additional Humans

  • Rebel joined us for Expedition #15.
  • Sarah joined me for doomed Expedition #17.
  • BigBrother5000 joined us for doomed Expedition #30.
  • SisterJen led the charge in Expedition #115 and was a co-conspirator for 2014-04-20 48 -122.
  • A Really Nice Guy and his son saved our sorry stranded asses in doomed Expedition #60.
  • Jennifer joined us for doomed Expeditions #69 and #70, and was along for successful Expeditions #127 and, along with Brian, #257.
  • Ma5000 and Pa5000 came along for Expedition #105.
  • The Fabulous Ms. Geni was a brilliant puppet for Expedition #119a.
  • Molly ran with me for Expedition #122.
  • Eavan came with for Expedition #161.
  • and Madeleine joined me for Expedition #246.
  • Hope was co-adventurer for Expedition #251.

Hashscots

CBear.JPG

Cinnamon Bear, my hashscot, is a North American brown bear and an accomplished travel mascot. He has traveled in all 50 U.S. states as well as Canada, England, and Wales, and has been to Hadrian's Wall, the White House, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and other well-known sites. He has been to the top of the highest mountains, or "mountains", in New Jersey, Missouri, and Iowa (with me) and to the tops of Oregon's Mt. Hood and Washington's Mt. Saint Helens (without me). Cinnamon Bear has been along for at least half of my Expeditions.

Aurora "Rory" Bearialis, my associate hashscot and cold-weather consultant, is a polar bear of uncertain age and origin. Her performance on Expeditions #103, #104, and #154 shows that she is more than capable of filling in for snow-related adventures or when the lead hashscot is busy hibernating.
