From Geohashing

Issue with the current events bot is that it figures links to user pages are strong indicators of participation in the expedition. I suggest using the discussion page for talking about an expedition. I am moving your comments over to the discussion page of the 2010-07-03 47 -122 expedition. --aperfectring 21:04, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Greeting

Hi -- thanks for the good wishes! My trip went better than expected. I have visited Seattle a few times and can't think of many places I'd rather live. I hope you're enjoying it! Swensonj 08:43, 17 September 2012 (EDT)

High geohash

Thanks for the concern brother, the wording is a bit confusing on the achievement page I believe. Never fear, I'll remove it from my pages so that nobody thinks I beat a record.

Hey

Thanks man, today's went much better! 2012-07-13 39 -105

The Old Neighborhood

If you're ever back in the Chicago area, throw me a line. We'll have to try a geohash meetup! RocketMac 13:04, 4 March 2012 (EST)

Seconding this. I'm another popping in and out of the Chicago area, but hopefully we can all meet up eventually. December perhaps? -Haberdasher 20:06, 22 March 2012 (EDT)
Yeah, that's probably the next time I'll be back! You guys (and Evil Uncle Nomo and others I've seen around on here) could certainly meet before then, though... OtherJack 22:36, 22 March 2012 (EDT)
Now I'm back, but it's November not December... plans changed. Will be here through Thanksgiving Saturday (the 24th) but not for the winter holidays. Attempting 2012-11-17 41 -87. -- OtherJack 17:33, 16 November 2012 (EST)
Unfortunately, I'm currently in London, and will be until after you leave. -Haberdasher 17:56, 16 November 2012 (EST)
So I gather... best of luck on Sunday! -- OtherJack 18:15, 16 November 2012 (EST)
And to you tomorrow! -Haberdasher 18:30, 16 November 2012 (EST)

Food

Any allergies/dislikes? When or if I (repeatedly) attempt the pie achievement, probably with cheesecake, it's good to know. Weekly meetups will be popular targets. --Traveller 15:08, 23 March 2012 (EDT)

Hello

Did you set up a bot to contact newly successful northwest geohashers? I got a message from you! howdy! Pearldog 00:46, 7 April 2012 (EDT)

Haha no, it wasn't a bot, I just watch to see if vaguely-Seattle area folks show up on this. Sorry if the message was overly generic. OtherJack 13:32, 7 April 2012 (EDT)

Geohashing Day 2012

Netting three in a row, at least in the Seattle graticule, is looking unlikely. Any plans? --Thomcat 13:06, 21 May 2012 (EDT)

I wasn't going to try today given the bike-unfriendly weather and the remoteness of the Seattle and Snoqualmie points from evening-running public transport. I guess I could have taken the day off work and aimed for the Seattle one during the daytime using Kitsap transit, but didn't really think about it. So I'm at work now with gps and camera at home. If you want to try for one, though, I'm up to join you. --OtherJack 14:54, 21 May 2012 (EDT)

100

So the requirement for 100 is to either geohash or meetup on Saturday's at 4:00. I am taking the next few weeks off baseball, so we should totally go for a semi-regular meetup. If interested, we will post meeting announcements in Seattle discussion pages each Friday and start racking up the meetups. --Thomcat 19:10, 18 June 2012 (EDT)

Sweet! No guarantee I'll be free every time, but if I am free then I'm game.
Technical wiki-question: I've been largely skipping the talk page and just posting (links to) planning directly on the Seattle main page, and I figured that was ok since they both tickle people's watchlists equally well. Or at least, I thought so from experience. Am I missing something here?
--OtherJack 19:31, 18 June 2012 (EDT)
The Talk page is a hazy mess and overdue for cleanup. Back in the day, I used to post at the top of it for each weekend and each hash point during the week that was achievable by me. Expedition planning pages are fine too - they are much easier to auto-generate than they used to be. --Thomcat 01:43, 19 June 2012 (EDT)
Done. Now I wish I could take today off - [1] looks worth of an expedition - is it archaeology? Naturally straight lines? Dang! --Thomcat 12:13, 26 June 2012 (EDT)
Yeah - that is super odd looking. There's another patch of the same white stuff in a field further north, but shaped totally differently, just a blob, no lines. --OtherJack 12:45, 26 June 2012 (EDT)

Hi!!

Thank you for the welcome! I have been to North America and I bet geohashing there is a lot harder- I mean, even though I live in a fairly wild area by Southern European standards you guys have a lot more wilderness to explore! I know not every hash is going to be as easy... but I guess that harder hashes get even more enjoyable, right? :) Werther 15:50, 14 August 2012 (EDT)

Seattle Audit

Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to audit the Seattle expeditions to determine how many were attempted and how many succeeded. I referenced an expedition ( 2012-03-15 47 -122 ) which was added by Traveller on March 22nd - he added the link to the Seattle page but didn't create an expedition page. NWoodruff my have counted this as a Seattle Success, or might not have. With no expedition page, Relet's GECO certainly did not. --Thomcat 18:19, 18 December 2012 (EST)

Ah, March 15, not April... makes sense now. I don't especially care to audit the expeditions, since I'm not counting or anything... I was just curious what you were referring to. -- OtherJack 18:32, 18 December 2012 (EST)

Doctor Who?

You around? We are planning something exciting, and also a normal meetup. You should be in on one of these at least! --Thomcat (talk) 17:45, 2 November 2013 (EDT)

I'm in Massachusetts for a conference through Monday! With no convenient hash points unfortunately ... hope your crazy dst idea went well! -- OtherJack (talk) 07:36, 3 November 2013 (EST)

Handshake

Looks like "this one goes up to 11"

About glacial boulders and huge-disaster square

Thanks for this really interesting story! Bulwersator (talk) 05:55, 16 March 2014 (EDT)

You're welcome! -- OtherJack (talk) 05:55, 16 March 2014 (EDT)
and wow, thanks for the quote page add! -- OtherJack (talk) 16:30, 16 March 2014 (EDT)

Dalek y subjects on the parking lot

Bit prozaic, but they're dumpsters. JwB (talk)

Welcome to the neighborhood

Hello, OtherJack! It would be great to run into you, I'll keep an eye open for geohashes along the NY/Newark margin that could be amenable to both of us. -- Jevanyn (talk) 16:18, 29 December 2014 (EST)

As will I! Even well into the Newark graticule will work, if it's accessible by public transport. It'll be cool to meet you if/when it happens. -- OtherJack (talk) 16:26, 29 December 2014 (EST)

Hackensack, New Years Eve?

Is there any chance you could get to Hackensack tonight? 2014-12-31 40 -74 It's a hell of a day for public transportation, I know, but we were talking about a meetup and Hackensack isn't that far from the city.

Ent Spotting

Of course they are really hard to spot. The hobbits thought it was a tree until it picked them up and spoke. The whole hashpoint was Tolkienesque with the mirror pool so I expect my imagination was running a bit wild. --Sourcerer (talk) 14:25, 24 February 2015 (EST)

Talk:2015-09-28_52_1

Makes me think just a bit of Northern Lights by Philip Pullman... -- OtherJack (talk) 00:27, 29 September 2015 (EDT)

I love that trilogy but I'm not sure of the connection. In the Amber Spyglass they crossed the river to reach the underworld. What's the link here? --Sourcerer (talk) 05:42, 29 September 2015 (EDT)

At the beginning of the first book they do an awful lot of sneaking around on canal boats with clunky diesel? engines in the East Anglian fens... -- OtherJack (talk) 18:05, 18 October 2015 (EDT)

Of course - Gyptians! And my river system was similar before it got drained for agriculture. --Sourcerer (talk) 06:08, 22 October 2015 (EDT)

Wiki users without user pages

Firstly, thanks for all the amazing work you're doing on the meetup graph! I saw that you wrote "I'm assuming all people with red links are wiki-users that just haven't made a homepage. may be too liberal an assumption??" in a recent update. There is a way to tell! Click on the redlink -- this takes you to the "Creating User:xxx" page. Then look in the "tools" links on the left for "User contributions". If they have an account on the wiki and have made edits, this link will take you to a list of what they've done. If there are no edits in the list, I guess you can assume the username isn't connected to an account. Hope that helps! — Benjw  {talk} 00:30, 21 November 2015 (EST)

Ah this will help a ton! Thank you! -- OtherJack (talk) 00:33, 21 November 2015 (EST)
Actually, I found an even better way: e.g. Special:Log/Solracs . This will have an entry "User account... was created" if they're a user... -- OtherJack (talk) 00:55, 21 November 2015 (EST)
And I noticed another thing: clicking on the userpage link displays an error in large red type ('User account "XXX" is not registered.') if it isn't. If the account is registered, even if the user hasn't made any edits, this error won't show up. — Benjw  {talk} 00:57, 21 November 2015 (EST)

Excellent, even simpler! -- OtherJack (talk) 00:59, 21 November 2015 (EST)

Re: 2015-11-27 51 12

Thanks for the congratulations. You are right, German words and city names sometimes look like someone lost at Scrabble. But even then, only one vowel amongst nine consonants is very unusual. -- TheOneRing 2015-11-29T20:21+1:00

In case you are around and available? --Crox (talk) 13:44, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I will go for this one of course -- are you here in New York?? or are you just alerting us to the easy hash? -- OtherJack (talk) 14:05, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Ah I see, you made an expedition page... the title's a link! Nm... I will comment there... -- OtherJack (talk) 14:05, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, we are staying about one mile south of the geohash :o) --Crox (talk) 14:08, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Israel?

You said you may end up in Israel at some point. Let me know when that is. Yosef (talk) 16:10, 13 September 2017 (UTC)

Sorry, just saw this now - wiki wasn't emailing for some reason. I don't have any current plans to go there, it was more of an aspiration... there seem to be a few active hashers there already. -- OtherJack (talk) 17:48, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
Let me know when you would. By the way there is only one active hasher. There was a three year hiatus before I went in 2017. ~~

Subdivision Geohash

You achieved the Subdivision Geohash!

--Fippe (talk) 09:13, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

This is really cool, thank you so much! I added it to the expedition page. But I also kept my gratuitous ribbon, since gratuitous ribbons are one of my favorite parts of geohashing :) -- OtherJack (talk) 02:45, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
Also, as someone who studied math in university I appreciate the discussion about how the subdivision achievement is equally difficult no matter how large or small the region. That is super cool as well. -- OtherJack (talk) 02:54, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
