Talk to me! I love getting talk messages

  • Press the + at the top of the page to start a new topic.
  • Use 4 squiggles (~~~~) to sign your comment with your name and the current time.
  • Use a colon (:) at the beginning of a reply to someone else. That indents it nicely.
  • Use 2 colons (::) to reply to a reply.
  • Use 15 colons (:::::::::::::::) to reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a reply.
  • If you need more than 15 colons you probably want to get on the instant messenger!

Meetups

Welcome! Great job on your first geohash expedition! -- Bear 01:57, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Hey, sorry I didn't reply to your email in time. Both User:04housemat and myself were considering the geohash in Romsey, but decided against it after realising how far it was, and how little money we had for the train. We both live in Poole, very close to the border between the two graticules. We shall definitely come to a meetup if we are free, and have the means. Mahahahaneapneap 02:48, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

wonderful! it's great to hear from you! happy hashing! --sermoa 06:43, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. Matt and I won't be coming today unfortunately. Neither of us would be able to get there for 4, and the train is quite expensive anyway. We shall meet you soon though! Mahahahaneapneap 12:12, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Sorry I didn't reply! I have been working hard. Yes, unfortunatly couldn't make it. Shall be good to see you soon though! --04housemat

Score card

I see you've used my score card :) I was looking at mine earlier, and I realised that I haven't hashed in the Swindon graticule yet, which is astounding, considering how limited the Southampton options usually are - and perhaps even more astounding that you haven't either, and you're a local! :) --macronencer 14:10, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

yeah i know, isn't it shocking! the problem is that i'm right at the bottom of swindon, and the trains are usually more convenient going south. one day there will be a geohash that falls near winchester, chandler's ford, hursley, twyford, shawford, salisbury, andover micheldever or basingstoke. those i can get to fairly easily. i often say to myself, "maybe tomorrow!" you just never know! --sermoa 14:17, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
actually there was quite recently a geohash in a field north of winchester that i could have walked to after work. if i had a gps device i would have done it, but without one i would not know when i was in the right place. --sermoa 14:18, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Google Maps

I really like your google map link! How did you get it to do that? Thepiguy 20:14, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Oh, it's a feature of google maps, if you're logged in and you click on "My Maps" you can create your own. --sermoa 07:30, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Brilliant! I've been looking for this feature. This might enable me to create much better GPX files for routes for my eTrex when cycling. By the way, is it possible to set the point locations accurately using numbers, or do you have to drag them by hand? I couldn't see any way other than dragging... --macronencer 11:46, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
If you search by coordinates in advance, then go to My Maps, edit your map, the arrow will still be pointing at the exact location. You do still have to line it up by eye, but at least you know where to go. It may not be exactly to the 6th decimal place, but it'll be very close. --sermoa 12:33, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

I've added Template:Advert and Template:AdvertTalk following our discussion. They didn't need parameters after all. Also, I see you're writing a notification program. User:Aperfectring has one already, and I'm thinking of extending it or writing one too with some other features, so we should talk about this if we meet again this week, or by e-mail later. --davidc 10:43, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Oh my word, that is completely awesome! Thanks! And now i see how to make my own in future. Nice! I do so love mediawiki! We'll talk about ActiveGeohasher soon. I wanted to do something different from Aperfectring -- sermoa 13:10, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
No need to use Template:AdvertTalk now. You can use Template:Advert on both the expedition page and the talk page, and it auto-detects which page it's being used on. --davidc 23:24, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! Are you trying to enable adding an image? that would be excellent! only on the talk page though, please. -- sermoa 13:09, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

hashdroid

Don't forget to ask relet about his updated version of hashdroid! --davidc 23:00, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

2009-10-03

Hey Sermoa, I got your text message, but didn't notice it until thepiguy had went to bed. I've e-mailed him, and will bring it up in the morning, but personally I'd love to have a tour from you of the city! A quick wikipedia search shows that it's the site of King Arthur's Castle and the Round Table, and that alone makes it for me (and I wanted to see the city before then). I doubt we'll be too early, probably early afternoon, but I'm hoping to have enough time to spend a couple hours in the city before we have to head to the hashpoint.

Again, bug thepiguy about it tomorrow morning on IRC. If he hasn't seen my e-mails, tell him I'm all for going early. -Srs0 21:34, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Brilliant, Srs0, i love showing people around our beautiful city! We can see the castle and round table, no problem. The free museum is also highly recommendable, and we can get some delicious coffee and paninis at my favourite cafe. -- sermoa 21:53, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Could you upload the source document for the adverts you leave at hash sites? Ta! --davidc 14:49, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi David, you can get the document here: poster14.odt I can't promise it'll be there forever, so you may want to save it locally. -- sermoa 21:07, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! I liked the idea. I'm going to persuade relet to translate it so we can put bilingual versions here when we hash. --92.225.42.195 23:33, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Postcard

I got your postcard today (and thepiguy got his yesterday). Thanks! It was great seeing you! Hopefully we'll see you in Germany before we go back... Also, don't worry, I won't forget that chocolate shop. It was delicious! -Srs0 17:44, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Your big google pin....

...is most excellent! --Michael5000 16:07, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

why thank you very much! :D -- sermoa 17:06, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

fame

You asked when did you get so many users? I imagine since Relet posted it on the news last month. Juventas 05:43, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Oh, amazing! i did not know! perhaps i should make a page on here for Active Geohasher :) -- sermoa 17:58, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome. ;) --relet 18:40, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Activegeohasher going mad?

Hey there, love activegeohasher and the posters (so much in fact that I changed the map template for the expedition pages to include a direct link). Here's the "but". The emails it's pushing out are a bit strange lately. Today I got one with the subject "Geohashing adventures [Wed 23 Feb, Sun 16 May]" ... something wrong there? - Mampfred 13:04, 22 February 2011 (EST)

I am very sorry, it is suffering from having so many users. it's trying to send 425 emails every day! I never expected to have so many people interested. -- sermoa 15:40, 22 February 2011 (EST)
Appreciate that. On a number of days in the past we just didn't get any email at all. I blamed it on the mass of emails you're trying to send through google. But surely the wrong date is an algorithmic error, nothing to do with the amount of people, is it not? Shame I've never written a single line of Ruby ;) - Mampfred 02:10, 23 February 2011 (EST)
You're right. The 16th May date was a silly algorithmic error caused by me searching for new geohashes by created date rather than geohash date. Somebody must have gone and looked up a retrohash on that date. Fixed now! -- sermoa 16:23, 23 February 2011 (EST)
Is there anything that can be easily distributed? I believe there are several people running servers (including myself, and certain ones running hosting companies) who might be able to help balance the load. I find activegeohasher very pretty useful myself, and it's sorry to see how late the notifications are coming in. With some graticules having mere twelve hours to reach a geohash, those hours of delay are really breaking the functionality. -- relet 05:01, 23 February 2011 (EST)
That's nice of you to offer. It would require some code changes, but i think there are some things we could do to make it distributed. It's currently only running on one heroku instance. The source code is on github, if you want to have a look if there's anything obvious that we can do. -- sermoa 16:10, 23 February 2011 (EST)

Thanks

I have "borrowed" some ideas from your page like your use of Google maps and the neat little grid for recording graticule visits. Like you, I discovered MediaWiki and now deliver all my Electronics teaching notes using this fine bit of software. Sourcerer 11:39, 6 July 2012 (EDT)

Welcome back!

Good to see you back in the geohashing universe! We're no longer neighbours, but I'm happy to have acted as a reminder to you that this exists. Perhaps we can nudge each other now and then to ensure that we stay active. Personally my own trigger to return was wanting to get fit again! I've been really out of shape, and haven't used my bike for ages. --Macronencer (talk) 20:45, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Awesome, yeah thanks for the reminder! Happy geohashing! Sermoa (talk) 20:53, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
