Expedition
Another day, another friend, another hash. After checking several graticules for the nearest hash and explaining the basics of geohashing to my friend, we agreed to check out the one in Niles. I didn't have too much in the way of plans for this one, but just doing it successfully would be enough to get a couple nifty achievements.
After a ride crossing several highways, the two of us entered an industrial park, scouring the generic industrial buildings to determine which one the hash was in. We saw the Coca-Cola logo and got our hopes up that the hash would be in the factory and we could get a tour while we reached the hash. As it turned out, the hash was indeed inside the Coca-Cola building. As the two of us had both been drinking Pepsi products, we joked that we had to leave our beverages in the car. A little searching got us to the front door.
Upon entering, we saw an employee at a front desk and a polar bear statue made of bottlecaps. We asked the front desk worker if we could get a tour, and she denied it before asking why. After inarticulately explaining geohashing to her ("It's, um, this Internet scavenger hunt thing, where, well, there's a new point each day..."), she noted again that we couldn't enter, "for insurance purposes". The worker also told us that the factory actually produced Coca-Cola products, hence the security concerns.
We did get a picture of the bottlecap polar bear and went on some other adventures in the area (visiting the nearby mall, meeting a friend, seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa replica) after the failed attempt to reach the hash. So, although the expedition was technically a failure, I still enjoyed the attempt.
