Plans

Sunday, the temps are going to hit their lowest in our extended heat wave at just above freezing before rising again over the next few days. The plan is going to be to drive down in the early afternoon and it looks like I will be able to park off Pumpkin Hollow Rd and walk down a road blocked by gates. The state forest roads sometimes have gates to close the roads to vehicle traffic during the winter months. If this turns out to be a very bad road or blocked by remnants of snow piles left by plows, I'll drive around the state forest and try the Southern approach if I can find parking on one of those forest roads.

Expedition

My sister texted me around 12:30 to know if I wanted to come over for dinner this evening. I agreed, but knew that put a time crunch on my expedition. I was planning on leaving a bit later, but now I had to get the dogs in the car and get ready to go right away. We were on our way close to 13:00 and were driving up Pumpkin Hollow Rd just before 14:00. However, the road turned to dirt and because of how wet it's been, the road was mushy and rutted in places. I got by those spots without too much trouble, but when the houses ended, the road turned into a 'Limited Use Highway' meaning the dirt road was not plowed or cleared in the winter. Not such a big deal as there was a dusting of snow on the road, but it looked even more rutted than what I was driving on before and was quite steep. In the past, I have gotten my little car stuck on steep icy roads and didn't want to repeat the performance in the middle of nowhere. I turned around and started heading to the other side of the forest to see if I could park there. I didn't think to take pictures before I turned around, and then, a ways down the road, I realized that I wouldn't have time to drive (an estimated) half hour and then walk 2-2.5 miles to the hash and get back home in time for dinner.

Instead of attempting the hash any further(and wasting time driving), I drove back to Rt 219 and stopped at McCarty Hill State Forest where we hiked around there for an hour.
