Expedition

I was going into the city and planned to cycle past this hash beforehand in a ~45 min detour, but wasted too much time and the plan fell through. I did take my bike with me, however, in case I was done early enough to make it to the hash before midnight. This turned out to be the case, and at 10:30 pm I took the U1 to Ohlstedt (I've never ridden it that far before). Then, I cycled 3.5 km to the hash in the dark. The bike, which I had borrowed since mine was stolen, was ancient and its dynamo very weak, meaning I could only just about see where I was going.

I made it, but as the hash was located 40 m from the street in a private garden, I had decided beforehand I wasn't going to attempt to reach it since it would involve sneaking around on private property in the night, which I'm not a big fan of. At other times in my geohashing career, I might have risked it, but not today. Though, looking at the satellite imagery afterward, I could possibly have reached it just by walking along the driveway to the back house and through a gap in the hedge to the adjacent garden …

Anyway, I left with around 35 minutes until my train left from Ochsenzoll, which should have been more than enough. However, I managed to take a wrong turn and was guided into a muddy forest where I almost got stuck in the mud. Also, my light was so dim I could hardly see the sides of the path. I finally realised my error when I decided to get my phone out for additional light and had to backtrack the entire path, getting stuck in the mud and having to push my bike at times. The subsequent paths weren't much better, and I couldn't switch gears properly with one hand holding the phone, so progress was slow. Additionally, the bike didn't have adequate mudguards, meaning my trousers, socks and shoes got completely drenched in dirt. I was able to pick up the pace when I made it to the main road, but unfortunately, I had set my navigation to Kiwittsmoor station instead of Ochsenzoll station, which meant I had to stop and check the map several times. It became increasingly clear I wasn't going to make it in time and I decelerated, finally reaching the station some three minutes after my train had left. At this hour, that meant an hour of waiting time. I decided against cycling home from here, cleaned my clothes as best I could and made myself comfortable, finally arriving home around 1:40 am.
