Expedition

After travelling India for almost two months, finally – my first reachable hash! November had come and gone with no chance of reaching a geohash without committing the whole day, at last breaking my streak of 46 consecutive months of geohashing, the third-longest of any geohasher ever.

The hash was located inside a building in northern Delhi, about 2 km from the nearest metro station. My hostel was in central Delhi, and I had to catch a train to Agra in the evening. My plans shifted around a couple times, since I was supposed to meet someone but not sure it would work out. I settled on visiting the enormous Akshaydam temple in the morning (verdict: absolutely breathtaking), and then seeing how much time I'd have left until my meeting, going for the hash either before or after.

You're not allowed to bring a phone into the temple, so I had to leave it at the gate, but it turned out that the temple compound included a four-part theme park-like series of rides, films, and exhibitions, which I didn't want to miss. Naturally, this led to me staying much longer than I intended to, only leaving by the time I was supposed to meet the other person. Luckily, they had temporal problems as well, and we finally met up at a station a while later.

During the entire meeting, I stayed aware of when I would have to leave to still make it to the hash before my train left, but as these things go, it ran slightly overtime and we had some unexpected problems making it back to a suitable station. I deliberated over whether I should still attempt the expedition: I'd probably make it, but there were some significant uncertainties like relying on an autorickshaw being available from the station and my train actually arriving at the correct platform; and I was doubtful I'd be able to reach the hash anyway since the building might contain absolutely anything (Google Maps said there'd be a noodle shop, but based on experience it is not to be trusted in these cases). Also, this was the last available train or bus to Agra, and I had already booked my accommodation there. Putting all these factors together, I reluctantly decided that the timeframe was just slightly too short for my liking, and aborted the expedition, instead spending some more time with my acquaintance and then making my way to the New Delhi train station.

I this this attempt technically counts as an expedition since the hash influenced my decision of which metro line to take, meaning my route might have been slightly different without it. Still, it seems like a major missed opportunity, and it turned to be the last in my 2.5-month travels through India. I really need to work on my time management with these things.
