From Geohashing

Welcome to Geohashing! After you wander around the Wiki a bit, you'll understand that the expedition report itself doesn't go on your user page, but gets a page of its own. See the "Reporting on your expedition" page under "Help" on the left side. (The expedition page is also used for planning or coordinating planning for an expedition.) In this case, since no one actually went, you could not worry about it at all, or if you want create the page purely as an "expedition planning" page. (We end up with a number of those, since some expeditions don't ever get off the ground.) Jiml 18:49, 17 November 2012 (EST)

New to wiki-editing AND to geohashing - I'm probably missing something obvious, but how DOES one create a new page?

The instructions "Creating any expedition page is as simple as creating the link, then clicking it to edit the page." didn't make it painfully clear enough for me - it didn't quite seem right to plop the 'subst:Expedition' on my user page, but I figured I'd at least see some kind of result that would lead me to a better attempt. Thanks for noticing, and perhaps for pointers towards a more standard approach... - Vbob

My usual approach is a tad lazy. I go to the Peeron page and adjust the grat and date to match the expedition I'm trying to add, and then I click on "Meetup" at the bottom left of the page. That takes you into the Wiki to the correctly named page, except it isn't there (yet.) There's a "create" tab at the top of the page, or you can choose (I think) "edit" at top, or I think there is a "create-type" link in the text that appears on the page. The Wiki makes it pretty easy to create pages: Any opening of a non-existent page offers to let you create it. Jiml 19:52, 17 November 2012 (EST)

Got it - on the second try, because my first Meetup link off a new Peeron page I hadn't selected the graticule yet... Not sure why you call that 'a tad lazy' - just not clear to a newbie... so I moved my 'didn't happen' notes to a new page. Thanks for the hand up! Vbob

It's "lazy" because I suspect you are supposed to type the name of the page on URL, not use the coordinate tool to generate the page name.  :-) By the way, I think the correct category for your page should be only "Expedition planning". It's non-obvious unless you read the Category:Expedition_outcomes page, but "Did not attempt" only applies if you actually made an expedition to someplace, just not the hashpoint. (Never mind - you fixed the tagging when it moved!)

P.S. Four tildes will sign your entry with your name and the date Jiml 20:20, 17 November 2012 (EST)

Ah, but I count "1, 2, 3, many" , so as long as I use many tildes I get a timestamp - curiously formatted, since I've long used 2012.11.17 for all the same logical reasons that pages are named that way Vbob 20:27, 17 November 2012 (EST)

How did this go, did you attempt an expedition? --Fippe (talk) 11:54, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
