I've been a long-time reader of xkcd, and I remember reading [http://www.xkcd.com/426/ the comic] when it was first published, but I guess it never occurred to me that it would inspire a dedicated community of people to actually do that, set up a wiki, and document their wacky expeditions for all the internet to read about. Fast forward to April 1, 2012 and the [http://www.xkcd.com/1037/ April Fools' Day comic] published that day, which showed many different versions to readers depending on their location, their operating system, and even their web browser. Wondering what all of the different possibilities were, I went over to the [http://blag.xkcd.com xkcd blag] to see if there was any information posted there about the comic and all of the factors that influenced what image each person would see. Sadly, there was no such post, but I did start looking at some of the other recent entries and stumbled upon [http://blog.xkcd.com/2012/02/27/geohashing-2/ one] about the [[2012-02-26_global|February 26, 2012 globalhash]] near the South Pole. The blag post included a link to this very wiki, and as I read all about how the algorithm worked, the variety of achievements I could earn, and, most importantly, the fun adventures being had by people around the world, I decided that I had to get in on the excitement myself! I finally got around to trying [[2012-05-02 40 -105|my first hash]] on May 2, 2012 and had a great time, so I'm sure that one will be the first of many, and I look forward to meeting you, dear reader, at a hash near us!

I've been a long-time reader of xkcd, and I remember reading the comic when it was first published, but I guess it never occurred to me that it would inspire a dedicated community of people to actually do that, set up a wiki, and document their wacky expeditions for all the internet to read about. Fast forward to April 1, 2012 and the April Fools' Day comic published that day, which showed many different versions to readers depending on their location, their operating system, and even their web browser. Wondering what all of the different possibilities were, I went over to the xkcd blag to see if there was any information posted there about the comic and all of the factors that influenced what image each person would see. Sadly, there was no such post, but I did start looking at some of the other recent entries and stumbled upon one about the February 26, 2012 globalhash near the South Pole. The blag post included a link to this very wiki, and as I read all about how the algorithm worked, the variety of achievements I could earn, and, most importantly, the fun adventures being had by people around the world, I decided that I had to get in on the excitement myself! I finally got around to trying my first hash on May 2, 2012 and had a great time, so I'm sure that one will be the first of many, and I look forward to meeting you, dear reader, at a hash near us!

I live in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA, in the lovely 40,-105 graticule, though I grew up in 42,-83. I like to travel when I have the chance, so I hope to visit hashes in as many places as I can!
