The software the wiki uses -- MediaWiki -- can take a little getting used to; I was lucky to have some experience with it from editing Wikipedia. As far as the talk pages go, they don't make it too complicated -- it's pretty much like any page made in the wiki, where anyone can edit and see it. So there isn't really a 'right' way to carry on a conversation, it's just whatever works for the people conversing!
