So I've been wanting to go geohashing for several months now. Today was my first real attempt at it, and I managed to convince mrkoffee to be my partner in crime. I'm very inspired by NWoodruff and his impressive track record! So, we had to drive some people down to a show downtown, where traffic was typical: Nightmarish. Well, we were down by where I go to school, so I suggested stopping by The Varsity while I figured out where the hashpoint was. It wasn't too far out at that point, probably 40 or so kilometers from my former dorm at Georgia Tech, so we plugged it into the GPS in the car to get an approximate location and off we went!
We left the Varsity about 6:30 or so, drove for an hour through moderate Atlanta traffic, very nearly got lost, and sang along to the car radio. As we passed into the local area of the hash, we noticed that it was fairly rural. I didn't know that it meant that disaster lay ahead of us on the trip, but when we pulled into a neighborhood straight out of Edward Scissorhands, I had a little bit of doubt. Suburbians tend to not like trespassers on their property. Well, we stopped when we ran out of road at a cul-de-sac, got out, and surveyed our position. The hash lay out beyond the picturesque houses and in a large bunch of woods. Then we saw several No Trespassing signs.
Sad face.
We walked around the area a bit, trying to see if we could get around what was apparently just a reservoir for the subdivision, but alas, when we asked a man who was mowing his lawn if we could get into those woods, he warned us that the property owner there had guard dogs for his horses, and, being rather fleshy and digestible, we chose discretion over valor and departed to a consolation prize of GeoSquishies at a RaceTrac and headed home. All in all, it was a solid first hash, and on Mouse Over Day, apparently! I'm just upset we couldn't complete the trip.
