  • Thwarted! What looked to be open desert turned out to be an artillery range for the US army. -- Eldin (talk) @43.2539,-115.9569 23:25, 1 March 2013 (MST)

When I first set out from 2013-03-01 42 -115 to come to this hash, I was very optimistic about it. I had finished with the earlier hash ahead of schedule, and had plenty of time to make it to this one in time for the midnight geohash achievement. I started hitting some fairly dense fog about 9 miles from the hash, but wasn't too worried about it because I was ahead of schedule.

I got to the turn-off I needed (which was a bit over 2 miles from the coordinates), and suffered the first blow to my optimism when I was confronted with a closed gate with a sign beside it indicating this was the boundary of the "Gowen Field Military Training Area". Still, since the hash was a good 2 miles past the gate, I continued looking for an approach which would allow access. However, all 3 roads I found leading into the area had closed gates. The 3rd closed gate I found sat just in front of a fork in the road, with signs indicating that the fork which went back towards the hashpoint led to an artillery range, while the other fork led to several firing ranges and a training course.

At that point, I decided that an artillery range probably wasn't the best place to go wandering about near midnight, even if I could find a way in that wasn't closed off. As a side note, I didn't see any signs which actually said to keep out, but I didn't feel comfortable going through a closed gate into a military area regardless.

Although this hash was a failure, having reached a hashpoint in a virgin graticule just over an hour earlier, I still feel like it was a successful night of geohashing.
