This graticule is very sparsely populated. The biggest municipality center is Kuusamo. There are only two municipalities, Kuusamo and Suomussalmi, that span the entire graticule. The population density is about 2 persons/km² Also part of the graticule belongs to Russia. The nature is mostly taiga forests and lakes.
Note that the graticule is distorted very narrow due to the proximity of North Pole.
