Expedition

Remember when I said I wouldn't do after-work expeditions anymore until mid-late Februrary in 2023-10-30_49_11? Well, apperantly me neither. Today's hash is just too perfect, probably the easiest location in 48,12 for me: Reachable by the in 2023-10-28_49_11 mentioned Nuremberg - Vienna train line, and even with additional busses to connect to in Regensburg. And with it being a hash inside a city, it's probably less anoying for me to search during darkness.

So I started another expedition after work, traveling down to Nuremberg central station and connecting towards Regensburg. According to my initial plans, I've got approximately 20 minutes from the closest bus stop (Johann-Schwaebl-Straße) to the hash and back, otherwise I'll arrive at home after 10 pm, something I'd rather avoid. As my trip towards Regensburg works as planned, I use the time to update my plans: If I use another bus stop for my return trip (Dürerstraße), I've got another 10 minutes until I need to catch my bus home. These minutes might become crucial.

Arriving in Regensburg, I proceed to the central bus stop. Arriving there, digital departure boards annouce that my bus is ~5 minutes late. I still don't have a precise estimate how long I'll take to walk to the hash, record proof, and continue on to Dürerstraße. So these minutes might again be the straw that breaks the camel's back. I change my plans in the last minute: Just in time I recognize that the soon departing bus number 8 (to Klinikum) starts by following the same route as my delayed bus to Johann-Schwaebl-Straße, but departs one stop early at Theodor Heuss Platz. The distance between Theodor Heuss Platz and Johann-Schwaebl-Straße is negligable, and this bus is scheduled to depart 10 minutes before my bus, and is on time. So the delayed bus ends up giving me ~ 8 further minutes to look for the hash. All stars seem to align with my expedition, even though I once again have to pull out my flashlight to see where I'm going.

But that's where my luck ends: While Open Street Map knows footpaths that should get me much closer to the hash, I am stopped 100 meters short. A locked gate kindly askes me to stay out, and I oblidge. While the footpaths are confirmed by satelite imagery, they seem to be inaccessable for the genreal public.

At least this speeds up my search dramatically, I record proof of the locked gate and the 100 meters between me and the hash, and I continue to Dürerstraße. I will have to return to 48,12. Maybe I can combine this with a weekend hash in Lower Bavaria. I'll be back, Regensburg. At least passing through your central station. And you still have to offer 49,12 too, where you're still one of the best cities to get such a hash.

I'm even 20 minutes early when I arrive at Dürerstraße, which allows me to get some food in Regensburg central station. Much appreciated, since I'll spend from 15:30 to 21:15 (almost 6 hours!) in public transport to not even get to claim a new graticule!
