Description

This graticule contains Cape Nosappu (納沙布岬), on the Nemuro peninsula. It is the easternmost point on Hokkaidō, and the easternmost point in Japan that is open to the public. It also contains part of Kunashir Island and some of the Khabomai Rocks.

The islands are currently administered by Russia, but Japan also claims sovereignty. This dispute is an ongoing source of friction between the two countries.

The islands are part of the Kuril archipelago. The disputed islands (which also include Shikotan and Iturup) are known in Japan as the Northern Territories (北方領土).
