Expedition 1 (Talex)
This geohash caused much excitement in the local geohashing gchat. I am off sick from work, but had an errand to run in the near-by area. I had 15 minutes spare, so decided to get the geohash. I drove (lame), but it might be the least bad way to get a geohash on a freeway on ramp. There's really not much to report, I turned onto the on ramp, kept in the right hand lane. GPX trace for proof.
Expedition 2 (Steve and KT)
My bike still being out of action for night time sorties, I turn to the Mighty Yaris and its owner, KT, for support. Even a boring adventure is still an adventure. We arrange to meet at the corner of Johnston St and Smith St.
I take the tram down Nicholson St, and indoctrinate KT in the ways of Google Maps Location Sharing. She's thrilled. She shares me her location in return, where she is still at home.
There's a gathering of juvenile delinquents at the tram stop. As I pass 30 centimetres in front of her, a young woman picks this moment to scream "I'M ON BAIL!" very very loudly. I'm simultaneously confused and deafened. Already this adventure is less boring than I imagined.
Onto the tram and KT excitedly reports that she sees my bobblehead moving south. This confirms my experience of also moving south. Her bobblehead isn't moving.
At Johnston Street, I get off and wander past all the cool bars. KT's bobblehead is still lounging about.
Reaching the corner of Smith St, KT's bobblehead is still taking it easy. With a little encouragement, it starts to move.
Finally the Mighty Yaris arrives and we are off. Except for a last minute negotiation over roles. I'm fairly confident that I can navigate us to Chandler Highway without technology assistance. It's forwards then turn right. KT isn't so sure. But I'm the navigator so I win.
We get on the Eastern Freeway. We get off the Eastern Freeway to begin our u-turn. It's no SpaceX Belly Flop but it's still a worthy manoeuver. Left off the freeway. Right onto Chandler Highway. Right back onto the Eastern Freeway.
We're excited. We need to be on the left side of the right lane. KT is convinced we need to be on the right side of the left lane. We have a frantic discussion about how east and west and left and right work, and KT comes around to my point of view.
I propose that we park at the geohash. KT points out there are cars behind us. I come around to her point of view.
We zoom. I frantically snap lots of screenshots. The closest one shows that we were 6.92 metres from the hash, and in the left lane. Although, hand on heart, I promise we were in the right lane.
Instantly the topic switches to ice cream, and where this is going to happen.
I resort to technology and discover Sundae School ice creamery in Clifton Hill. I do love a pun name. It's closing in 15 minutes. We race in.
After some deliberation, KT settles on orange sherbert and I take yoghurt and "wild strawberry". It's actually really good. I wasn't sure I was even in the mood for ice cream, but this is excellent.
There's a large map of the US on the wall, so we take the opportunity to study for WhereTaken USA and Statele, and to reminisce about past trips to the US.
A quick walk around the block, and our ice creams, as well as our not-totally-boring-adventure, are concluded.
