This proposed achievement can be claimed when you successfully reach a set of coordinates in a location which shares the same name as yourself and provide the necessary proof. 'Your name' can be any of the following:

  • Your first name
  • Your surname
  • Any middle name you may have
  • Your username
  • Any nicknames you are legitimately referred to as

This shared name can be any part of the point, such as a street name (John Street), a specific location (John F. Kennedy International Airport), or a village/town/city name (John o'Groats). The achievement would also be considered valid if the name is part of a compound word (Johnstone, for example).

Creativity is allowed, to an extent. Using cognate names, alternative spellings, or nicknames is a valid approach to the achievement (Muhammad could use Ahmed, Mohammed, or Mo, amongst others. Katherine could use Catriona, Catherine, or Katie, amongst others). This also allows for translations of names where there is a shared common origin, such as Hans/John, Jacob/Israel, and Amerigo/America. Names that have the same meaning but do not have a connection beyond this (such as Lily and Caitlin, both of which can mean "pure") are not considered valid for this achievement, as this opens too many possibilities for each individual to choose from. Beyond these restrictions, if your claim can be justified in a meaningful way, it is considered to be valid.

Proof consists simply of an explanation of which part of the area is the shared name ("My surname is Smith, and the point was on Smith Street"). Identification is not required to prove that the name is your own. We run on an honour system here, and we rely on you following this.

If you are using your username, your account must be older than the time at which the geohash point was announced; creating an account with a matching name after the point has already been announced is cheating! If you change your legal name in the future, you do not lose the right to any previously claimed Namesake achievements. It is up to you whether you choose to remove these from your profile. If you are referred to by a name that differs from your legal name, you are able to use this for this achievement. If you get married or legally change your name specifically for this achievement, you certainly deserve to claim it.

Past Occurrences

The achievement was inspired by Fippe (jokingly) asking if Yosef reaching a point near to Beit Yosef counted as a Couch Potato Geohash. - 2023-12-12 32 35
