Location

In a field next to a KFC, Straiton, Edinburgh, UK

Participants

George and Susanne

Plans

Bus route 47, early afternoon. Hoping to hit the Glasgow hashpoint later in the day too.

Expedition

"Early afternoon" didn't happen because we met old friends for a coffee at 1130 and ended up spending several hours with them. (They were interested in the geohashing concept and seemed like potential future participants.) So we got on the bus around 3:30 and arrived near the hashpoint around 4.

This one was a "no public access". Many places that look like grassy fields in Scotland are accessible, but this one was fenced with wire in a way that clearly seemed to apply to people as well as livestock. We walked up to the KFC at the north boundary, but the field was even less accessible from there (high walls and solid 2m fences). From the sidewalk it appears we were about 30m from the hashpoint. I got a couple of green flashes on Geohash Droid but they seemed clearly to be glitches arising from the location uncertainty expanding briefly when we moved.

The hashpoint was at the sourthern outskirts of the Edinburgh metro area. Depending on which way you pointed the camera you could conclude you were in a commercial zone (Burger King, KFC, IKEA, Costco), an industrial area (Progressive Waste Solutions, McKay Skip Hire) or a rural idyll (expansive views toward the Pentland Hills).
