Located in the interior of British Columbia, Canada, the largest city is Vernon with a population of 36,000. Dozens of smaller cities, towns, municipalities and communities are mostly scattered along the five highways.
The area is mostly undeveloped and covered by forest and rangeland. However, it is also mixed with hundreds of lakes, rivers, and streams; agricultural fields, orchards, and vineyards; steppes with cacti, swamps, and permanent snowfields.
