Description
This graticule includes the northeastern part of Kunashir Island and the southwestern tip of Iturup island.
Both islands are currently administered by Russia, but Japan also claims sovereignty. This dispute is an ongoing source of friction between the two countries.
Kunashir is known in Japan as Kunashiri (国後), and Iturup as Etorofu (択捉). The islands are part of the Kuril archipelago. The disputed islands (which include Shikotan and the Khabomai rocks to the south) are known in Japan as the Northern Territories (北方領土).
