Plans

Luke and Gabe decided that, without much else to do, they should make the ~45 minute journey by car to reach the day's hash point. They loaded their canine friend, Emily, into the car and set off.

Expedition

Unfortunately, Luke and Gabe were fooled by the presence of the sun into believing the day, and thus the expedition, to be one of a comfortable temperature. This was not the case, and in fact, the expedition was only a few degrees (F) from qualifying for the "Frozen Geohash" achievement.

After parking the car near the hash, the two exited the car and began to make their way, accompanied by Emily (the aforementioned dog), toward the hash. Gabe promptly slipped on an icy bit of ground and fell. After collecting his dignity, the trio pressed onward. The hash was located without much difficulty, approximately 39 meters off of the road, in a field of light brush and small trees.

Geocache Expedition

In an attempt to extend their hashing adventure, as well as earn themselves a potential "Hash Collision" achievement, the two found the coordinates of a nearby geocache and were quickly en route. The cache was elusive, leading the searchers on a confused traipse through some even more difficult terrain. Dodging thorny bushes and low-hanging vines, the two eventually located the cache nested in a fallen tree trunk. Unfortunately, the geocache was not within eyesight of the location of the day's hash. Upon checking the coordinates of each, it was found that the two were 455m apart. In light of this, it was decided that the cache was worth an honorable mention. Emily (the aforementioned dog), was no help in locating the cache as it lacked the necessary hotdog smell. After marking their presence in the cache log, Luke and Gabe replaced the cache and headed home for some Warm Dinner.

Warm Dinner

African Sweet Potato And Peanut Stew

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
(4 servings)

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon oil
1 small onion, diced (to yield 1 1/2 cups )
2 cloves garlic, minced (about 1 tablespoon)
1 medium sweet potato, chopped into 1/4 inch cubes (to yield 2 cups)
2 cups broth
14 oz can diced tomatoes
1/4 cup peanut butter
2 teaspoons New Mexico chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
14 oz can chickpeas, drained
2 cups tuscan kale, destemmed and chopped

Instructions:
Heat the oil in a dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onion and saute about 5 minutes, until translucent and just starting to brown in spots. Add the garlic and saute until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the sweet potato, broth, tomatoes & their juices, peanut butter, chili powder, and salt. Stir well to ensure the peanut butter is thoroughly mixed in and there's no clumps remaining. Simmer, uncovered, for about 15-20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender. Once the sweet potatoes are tender, add the chickpeas and the kale to the dutch oven. Stir to combine and heat until the chickpeas have warmed through and the kale has wilted.
