Expedition

In the evening, I inline-skated towards Harderberg. I got so close to the coordinates. Into a 75-meter radius, in fact.

Unfortunately, that last part of the street went downhill pretty steeply, I could not brake anymore, and I fell. My first impression was that I got lucky: My face was fine, my legs too, and so was my (dominant) left hand. My right hand, however... (NSFL: click here if you want to see a z-shaped wrist)

Hmmm, how bad could it be? I could still move my fingers, so it couldn't possibly be broken, right? I could just skate to the hospital, wouldn't want to bother the ambulance, right? But I decided to do the responsible adult thing and called an ambulance. Right after I got off the phone with them, I started feeling absolutely miserable, I suspect that this is when the adrenaline wore off.

My arm in a cast

The ambulance arrived quickly and after fixating my arm, the friendly medics took my to the nearby Franziskus-Hospital. In the hospital, the staff x-rayed my arm, detecting two broken bones in my wrist. They fixated my fingers with devices that in English apparently are called Chinese finger traps, and weighed the rest of the arm down, in a procedure eerily similar to the 2009 hasthastrophy. They must have had me on some good drugs, I barely felt a thing.

They kept me in over night and originally wanted to do the operation the next morning, but then it turned out that the arm was too swollen to operate on, so they moved the operation to next Tuesday.

I was, and am, glad to live in a country with good healthcare where even boneheads like me who go inline-skating downhill get treated, and to have been in a hospital with such competent and friendly staff. I got discharged around noon on Thursday and am looking forward to getting a titanium plate implanted next Tuesday, joining the cyborgs.

Post-op update

On 2024-09-03, I was operated and am recovering well from my fall. The X-ray photos below show my broken wrist and my new titanium implant. I was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday and felt well enough to go on an expedition to Vechta today, the following Saturday. --Fippe (talk) 20:06, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
