Talk:Sightseeing achievement
From Geohashing
This is a proposal made on 2024-08-05. Please leave comments and suggestions below, indicating your thoughts on the proposal, including:
- Support - you think this proposal should be added with zero or minor changes
- Do not oppose - you think it's boring/meh/not for you, but it wouldn't harm to have it created
- Oppose - you have a specific reason as to why this ribbon should not exist (state this reasoning in your comment)
- Needs work - you think the achievement should be created after more significant changes have been made
See Proposed achievements for more information on this process.
- Do not oppose. Changing the picture on the wikipedia page in order to get this achievement is not allowed. - Danatar (talk) 06:23, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
- Support/Maybe needs work. I think this is a great thing if you're on the way to a geohash and can then visit something interesting. I would actually be in favor of a more open attitude towards this achievement. So not exactly tied to the pictures in Wikipedia... You're excited about a place, you take photos and when you get home you realize that the photos aren't quite the same as the ones in the Wiki. But like everything, you have to have some kind of proof because there will always be people who cheat. So it works for advance planning, but it becomes difficult for spontaneous ones. I made a few spontaneous stops myself on my motorcycle geohashing geocaching tour. The pictures of "Burg Alt-Ramschwag" aren't exactly the same as on the Wiki but I accidentally took an exact picture of the "Mosterei Möhl" one on Wikipedia. So I have both situations and for me both should count. I claimed the achievement for myself. see expedition on 2024-10-16. Globescorer (talk) 10:01, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- I disagree strongly with the idea that non-matching photos should count; wouldn't these just be ordinary photos? I don't think simply taking a photograph of something that has a Wikipedia page is enough for an achievement. If it was, I would have the opportunity to claim this achievement on every single expedition by just taking one additional photograph and contributing no additional effort. The process of finding where and how to match the original photo is a significant portion of the proposal, and removing that requirement changes the achievement entirely. It's about recreating the original to show the changes across time, not just taking a photograph.
- I want to provide some examples of how this would turn the achievement from being something requiring effort into something almost always applicable without even trying. I will do this by selecting one photograph from 5 of my recent expeditions (none of which are eligible for the proposal as currently defined) and listing which Wikipedia article the photograph relates to. All of these examples are either minimal effort or just not significant in any way to the area, but all of which technically are mentioned within the Wikipedia article (even the last one).
- File:2024-09-19 56 -3 Motorway.jpg - wikipedia:M9 motorway (Scotland) / Photograph of a generic portion of the motorway
- File:2024-09-18 55 -4 Panorama.jpg - wikipedia:The Beatson Institute for Cancer Research / Building can be seen in the background of the image
- File:2024-09-16 56 -4 Cafe.jpg - wikipedia:Croftamie / Photo taken in the But and Ben, mentioned by name in the article
- File:2024-09-12 55 -4 InfoSign.jpg - wikipedia:Bothwell / Photo taken in the Marion Gilchrist Garden, mentioned by name in the article
- File:2024-08-20 56 -3 Nandos.jpg - wikipedia:Stirling / Photo taken in the Forthside Nando's, mentioned as part of a "major regeneration project" in the article
- By widening the definition of the achievement to allow practically any photograph to be valid, it removes any value or desire for the achievement itself, thus making it worthless (and actually turning it into a proposal I would oppose). --KerrMcF (talk) 01:13, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- So how similar the made picture must be, that it counts? Here are some more fotos from my trip of the castle Alt-Ramschwag: do they count?
- and do we need to better define what exactly counts as sightseeing? Or is everything found on Wikipedia worth getting this achievement? Like your example from the highway if it would be the exact same foto? I hope not. But I still like and support the achievement.
- And how near the sightseeing place has to be to the Geohash? Or is it enough to simply have visited a corresponding place on that expedition, no matter how close it is? Globescorer (talk) 06:16, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- The achievement isn't just for going sightseeing, it's for "recreat[ing] a photograph found on the Wikipedia page of a place close to the geohash". The photo must be "[a] genuine effort to match the original", not just a photo of the same thing. Neither of your photos at Ramschwag count, as they are not recreations of the photos on the Wikipedia page, which is the crucial requirement of the achievement.
- Everything found on Wikipedia allows you to earn the achievement. For the M9 motorway, one would have to either recreate the aerial photo ("M9 Motorway at Newbridge") or the photograph of the speed limit sign ("70mph"), neither of which would be the easiest to recreate and would require specific locations of geohashes. The photograph taken on the expedition must be the same as the photograph on the Wikipedia page, that's the point, it's a challenge.
- The wording of "close to the geohash" is intentionally vague, because an exact definition would probably be quite restrictive, possibly discouraging exploration of the nearby areas. However, 5km would not be "close to the geohash", in most cases, so the choice of article has to be reasonable. In my expedition, the geohash location and the site of the photograph were under 1km apart. --KerrMcF (talk) 23:38, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- OK, then I claim it just for the "Mosterei Möhl" factory which was only 375m from the Geohash...
- But I would still actually be more in favor of a more open attitude towards this achievement. So not necessarily tied to the pictures in Wikipedia... But I can live with both... :-) Globescorer (talk) 09:23, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Support - A really nice concept that encourages exploring the area around the hash. Another way to check for nearby wikipedia pages is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Nearby#/coord/52.0481390,-0.7423466 (replacing the co-ords in the url with that of the geohash), which might be worth adding to the page. --PeterRoder (talk) 11:01, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Support. I would suggest being slightly clearer about what it means to "recreate" a photo, though. Probably you intend that the viewpoint is quite similar, but you might also indicate what does and doesn't matter. Does time of day matter? Time of year? Stevage (talk) 02:29, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- Support. As others have noted, a great way to promote hashers exploring a bit more around the hash's vicinity (it already has been for me even in its proposed stage)! I guess more specifications on rules e.g. max distance from hash couldn't hurt much, though I honestly trust folks to honor system this properly. Just convey the spirit of the achievement.
