My girlfriend Ruth had come up to the Benalla region for the weekend, taking advantage of the easing of lockdown restrictions to control the spread of Covid-19.
We went on a day trip to Beechworth and surrounds on Sunday and one of the many attractions of the local area was a nearby geohash.
The geohash itself seemed fine - right inside a national park and not too far from a road. The main obstacle was its encasement by private property without a long traipse through wilderness that our day did not allow.
And the obstacle won out. We first approached the hash from the north, traversing steadily shittier roads in my 4WD hilux ute, opening and closing gates with great abandon, admiring the granite-strewn sub-alpine plateau of the Beechworth hinterland before finally arriving at the last turnoff alongside the national park and encountering a definitively uninviting "Private Property Keep Out" sign. We returned around, retracing our wheel tracks and opening and closing the same gates in reverse order.
Our second attempt had us accessing the hash from the south, from the main Beechworth-Wangarratta Rd, but here, too, we were stopped by private property. This time the road proved to be even more obviously non-public and took us directly into a vineyard, closed to the public because of Covid. We had to choice but to abandon our expedition and satisfy our adventurous needs by indulging in cheese and mustard purchases at Milawa on our way home.
It later turned out the private property at the north end of the hash only lasted a few hundred metres and we could probably have got through it without any issues to the national park on the other side.
Here is the route we took.
