Revision as of 11:27, 16 June 2008

This page was created so that a standardised format could be chosen and described for the creation of geohashing groups on Facebook. Its secondary purpose is to collect a list of geohashing-related groups already on Facebook.

"Standardised format" mainly refers to the name and type of the group. Please feel free to add arguments for and against each possible format under its appropriate heading.

Possible name formats

The name of the Facebook group should include the word "Geohash" or a variation of it (e.g.: "Geohashing", "Geohashers") as well as the location around which the geohashing is taking place (as per the Active Graticules Guidlines). Because there are some towns/cities with the same name, but in different countries, [Town/City] would work best if you use what Facebook gives you when you start typing in their "City/Town:" box.

For example:

"Toronto, ON" refers to Toronto, ON, Canada

while

"Toronto, Australia" refers to Toronto, New South Wales, Australia

Geohashing - [Town/City]

Geohash - [Town/City]

This one is the most common format for groups at the moment. It would mean less groups would have to change to conform to the standardisation.

  • Facebook don't allow groups to change names once they are created. They say, "Sorry, but once the group is created the name can't be changed. No one wants to wake up one morning and notice that their 'Chuck Norris Rules' group has been changed to the 'Tony Danza Fan Club.'" [1]

[Town/City] Geohashers

Geohashers - [Town/City]

Possible group types

Facebook allow a group's type to be changed after other people have joined it, so it isn't as important as the name format.
