The achievement can be claimed when you reach a geohash completely on foot on the correct day, and take a photo of yourself containing the necessary proof. You must depart from your residence or place of business (or other) and proceed to the geohash by walking, jogging or running. Travel by crutches and manual wheelchairs also qualifies. It's definitely against the spirit of this achievement to stay over Friday night at your friend's house, or drive over to do some work at a satellite office in order to start within closer walking distance of the geohash. Driving your car to the base of a mountain containing the geohash and walking all the way up does not count, even if you have to walk forty miles. You have to proceed the entire way on foot.

What Counts As Walking?

Running, climbing, scrambling, crawling and taking turns carrying other geohashers in your party on piggyback still count as walking, and swimming across a body of water to reach the geohash does not invalidate your walk. You must not bicycle, skateboard, kayak, take public transit, or accept a lift other than a piggyback ride on a walking person. Snowshoeing or sliding down a snow-covered slope on an improvised sled do not invalidate the walking achievement, but you may not take the Walk Geohash and the MacGyver Achievement for the same expedition. Either it was a vehicle or it wasn't. Travel wholly or partly by crutches or wheelchair does qualify for this achievement, even if your friends push your wheelchair part of the way.

Note that if a number of geohashers drive to the home of another and from there proceed on foot to the hash, only the one whose home served as the starting point has completed a Walk Geohash, even though they all walked the same distance. It's a bit like the Couch Potato Geohash in that you have to wait for the right opportunity for you.

Remember, there's no such thing as "not within walking distance." It's just that some walks are longer than others, and if you're not good at walking underwater, sometimes you have to wait for winter freeze up, or a major geologic event in order to proceed in your desired direction. (Note that underwater walking does not qualify you for the Underwater Geohash achievement unless the geohash is reached while you are underwater).

Swimming part of the way will not invalidate the walking achievement, but no skateboards, buses, helicopters or taxicabs.

Winners

The following Geohashers have supplied proof and have won this award, (in descending order of total distance walked). Please only mention your longest (total distance) walk. Use Walk Geohashes to list the shorter ones in order to tidy up this award page.
