The day's hash was in a field of grass and weeds near Gibbs, Missouri.
Expedition
excellentdude: While enjoying a brief break from my demanding summer work schedule, my girlfriend came up to Kirksville to visit me for a few days. On this Friday, we were looking for something to do, the geohash coordinates fell somewhere near Kirksville, and we decided to go.
We arrived at the area and drove around for a short bit to determine where exactly the hash was and who might own the land. While doing so, we passed the same Amish horse and buggy twice. We determined that a house on the corner north of the hash was probably that of the landowner. When we pulled up, a man was in his front yard. He confirmed that it was his land and was happy to let us proceed. On our way back up the road toward where the hash was, we passed the same Amish family again. They smiled, and we smiled back, but they must have thought we were lost for sure. I would've gotten a picture of the buggy for the wiki, but I didn't remember if Amish people were OK with their pictures being taken.
We parked on the side of the road were there was a break in the fence surrounding the field containing the hash. The hash was a good little ways west into the field, so we started walking. The field was not a farming field, and not far into it the grass became very tall. It was as tall as we were, in fact. When we were about halfway to the hash, we saw two or three deer run away into the trees from near where we thought the hash was. We kept going, but the thick, tall grass was slowing our pace quite a bit. We finally made it to the hash and took all the normal pictures.
On the way out, we (or I should probably say I) decided to take a different route than we had on the way in. From where we started in, we had to angle quite a bit to get to the hash. So on our trip back east to the road, I wanted to go straight east for a shorter trip through the tall grass. Since the clouds were darkening, my girlfriend agreed this was a good idea. On our way back east, a tiny fawn jumped up from the grass right beside us and ran away. The grass was so thick that we didn't even see it before it sprang up, and it was only about a meter away from us. It really scared us for a moment! Unfortunately, it was too fast to be photographed. As we kept going, we found ourselves in a planted field. Something wasn't right, as it should have been all grass back to the road, but we kept heading for the road. Eventually, after some more angling, we made it back to the road. When we did, we recognized that we were south of an Amish house we had previously driven past, which was well south of where we had parked to enter the field. So, even in a sport that more or less mandates knowing how to use a GPS well, I still can't always find straight east. :-)
