Location

Being in the very top corner of your graticule means that a lot of hashpoints are pretty far away, and as poor college kids just trying to get by, Justin and Holly don't exactly have the funds to drive to the opposite corner all the time. However, this hashpoint was so close to them, they couldn't not go. They took the less than 10 minute drive across town, and eyeballed the point as being in a field somewhere right next to an EcoLabs building.

Plans

  • Justin looked the point up and found it on his GPS. This was about the extent of the planning.

Expedition

Thursday, July 9 was the one week anniversary of Justin and Holly's introduction and mini-adventure in geo hashing. The previous week they had made a trip out into the country to the point that day, but did not bring a camera to document their trip and also did not actually make it to the point. A picnic in the car on the side of the road was about as good as they were going to get at 10 pm. They were both quite excited to see a point right in town for the day's geo hash. It was a nice day outside and since neither had to work until later that evening, they headed out the door pretty quickly. The drive took less than 10 minutes, before they found themselves in the midst of a ritzy townhouse neighborhood. They parked down the street from the point, in front of a face and jaw surgeons' office. During the walk towards the point, Justin took pictures of the lovely scenery, which included fancy street signs and a fountain. They then crossed the street and wandered through the EcoLab parking lot, wondering what kind of interesting chemicals they might get on their feet. When they arrived at the grass they began to wonder if they really wanted to venture out into the field of taller grass. It could have been harboring anything...even velociraptors! Luckily, as they began to walk down the small grassy strip, they realized that they wouldn't have to head out into the field at all. A quick look at the GPS showed them that they had walked right onto the point. Justin continued his picture-taking by documenting the site and the GPS reading (which may or may not be visible due to glare from the sun). They were not prepared enough to leave an xkcd marker, but did put a stick in the ground to mark the spot. All in all, it was a fun and easy geo hash and allowed ATCtrl and Holly to pop their graticule's cherry!
