Location

In Pitkäpelto, Karhunpää, Valtimo. The hashpoint lies in a field, which this time of year has about half a meter of snow on it, so accessing the point will be no problem.

Today's hashpoint fell quite close, only 20 kilometers from his home. As Pastori had plans to visit the stores in the center of Valtimo and the hash would only mean a detour of few kilometers, this was a perfect day to try geohashing for the very first time.

Expedition

Beautiful morning.

In the night before, temperature had dropped to -25°C and the morning was very crisp and bright. The sun was shining but it was still -15°C at 8 am, when Pastori and his wife set out to geohashing adventure. The right roads were navigated quickly and soon they found themselves beside the right field, only 200 meters from the hash.

First steps in the snow.

The road alongside the field, which would have led almost directly to the hashpoint, was not ploughed, so Pastori put on his high-shaft leather boots and started trudging towards the hashpoint. His wife stayed on the road to take some pictures. Fortunately a snowmobile had driven in the roadbed earlier, and there was only 20 cm of loose snow on top of the hard-packed trail it had made, so going was not too difficult.

Doing the GPS dance.

After 200 meters of walking, Pastori began to find his way towards the hashpoint. GPS dancing to find the exact spot took some time, because the screen of the smartphone was difficult to see in the blinding sun amidst the blazingly white snow field, only shadow available being his own body. After a while, he succeeded, took some pictures from the exact spot and returned, exhausted but happy.
