Expedition

Danatar

On the way to my parents I made, as usual, a little detour to visit a hashpoint. After driving out of Würzburg, I followed a country road to Helmstadt, the nearest town to the hashpoint. From there I just had to follow the road for 2 km to a small parking area at the edge of the hashpoint's forest. When after 3 km I still hadn't found that parking area, I stopped and took a look at map and GPS unit, only to find out that I had missed a turnoff. I drove back, took the correct road and soon I found the parking area. Then I walked along a forest track, which was covered in fallen leaves. According to the map, the hashpoint should have been directly on or next to that track, but my position on the GPS unit's map had nothing to do with the tracks stored in it. I reached the part of the track nearest to the hashpoint, but then I had to walk off track for about 40 metres. Wet branches tried to embrace me, but the underbrush was quite sparse in comparison to other expeditions, so it wasn't much. The GPS unit had trouble finding the correct coordinates (probably because of the wet weather) and I had to walk around for a while, but finally I reached the hashpoint. It had many wet leaves but nothing else. Because of the wrong turn earlier and the jumping hashpoint it was already past meetup time when I reached the exact spot. I don't think I missed anybody though.

After the usual pictures I walked back to the car by the same route. On the way and a little to the side I found a monument I had missed earlier, commemorating the Bavarian dead of the battle of Helmstadt on 1866-07-25 (DJIA not available) during the Austro-Prussian War (between Prussia and the German Confederation, which included Austria). In that battle, the Prussian forces defeated the Bavarians. Next to the monument a sign explained the matériel used by the soldiers. Then I drove on. In one of the following villages sheep were walking on the road because the fence around their pasture had fallen down, but because of another car behind me I couldn't take any pictures.
