In the morning I had to drive back to Dresden in time for the late shift which starts at 3 p.m. At first my plan was to start around 9 a.m. and visit this and maybe the 50 13 hashpoint along the way. But the day before a good friend messaged me that I could visit her and the baby in the morning. Since it isn't easy to find a good time to visit them because so many other people want to see the baby all the time I couldn't say no. Thus I started my journey at 10:40.
The first leg of the journey was easy, I drove past Estenfeld and then along a state road until I was at the Vogelsburg former monastery, right uphill from the hashpoint. I parked the car and walked along the vineyard tracks and along the lines of vines until I was directly uphill from the spot. I was in the Escherndorfer Lump, one of the parts of the Franconian wine region with the highest wine qualitiy because of its excellent geological and geographical conditions. On of those conditions are slopes of up to 70 % and I found myself in one of the spots at the higher end of that spectrum (~50 % at the hashpoint, a bit more uphill from it). Walking down between two rows of vines was very difficult and more than once I slid for a bit before being able to stop. I had taken the correct row of vines and came directly to the spot without having to cross over to another row. I took pictures, then climbed back up. It was very difficult and in one place I even had to pull myself up by using a survey stone because it was so steep. There were some men working on young vines so I asked them if this was indeed the Escherndorfer Lump (it was) and what grape variety these were (Riesling and Silvaner). Then I walked back to the car and continued my journey to Dresden. First I continued to Volkach, then via Kolitzheim and Unterspießheim to the A70 Autobahn. As I was short on time I drove a bit faster than usual, I reached work five minutes before the start of my shift, just in time to get changed.
The hashpoint is not far from the 2009-02-11 one and I cycled along the track above the spot during that expedition.
