Expedition

Work was sending me to a conference in Wilmington, NC on the 5th and 6th but my brother lives just 2 hours away in New Bern, NC. I was able to fly down early and rented a car for the weekend to spend time with the family. I knew the day before where the hashes were for the weekend and I thought this wouldn't add too much time to the drive but I wasn't sure if it would be posted or not. I figured it would still be worth it to give it a try and it would break up the drive.

I had an early morning flight and landed in Wilmington around 10am or so. Getting the rental, I pulled out my directions (or maybe I just used my phone GPS. I'm typing this up months later and don't remember all the minute details) and made my way to the hash. Locating the field by the hash, I was surprised that the forest where the hash was supposed to be was cut down and that area was very overgrown with new growth. It might be tricky to get this one even though there was no Posted signs. The area along the road was extremely thick and I didn't see any way through on that side.

Walking along the edge of the field and the woods, I found an animal trail and carefully made my way to the creek a little ways in the woods. It was a small creek but it had cut a deep trough through the land and was about 12 feet (4 meters) deep. I was hoping the hash was on my side of the creek, but as I got closer, I realized it was just on the other side and I would have to find a place to cross. Spotting a large landmass in the creek, I poked it with a stick and it seemed pretty stable. I carefully hopped over and when it didn't move, I was able to safely get the rest of the way across.

Getting close to the hash, I did a very careful GPS dance to continue avoiding the bushes with VERY large thorns. I was able to get my pictures and found a slightly easier way back across the creek and back to the car.

I got to my brother's place around noon, just in time for lunch. It was a nice visit, although I should mention my brother was away for a month continuing his training for his job (Marine Jet Pilot). Still, it was great to see the sister-in-law and visit with the little nieces.

Unfortunately, there were no easily reachable hashes on the way back on Monday or during the conference.

Bonus Note: There has not been any additional expeditions written up as of 5 months later so this appears to be a Last Man Standing.
An expedition by Leidenfrost and π π π was created on 2020-03-31 making this Last Man Standing null and void.
