Expedition

Scheduled to be another hot day, I wanted to get out to this hash in the morning while it was relatively cool. This looked to be a 15 mile ride one way and my longest ride so far of the year.

I was ready to go a little after 10am and figured the round trip would be about 2 hours or so. Google said it was a pretty straight shot down Rt 62 and then Rt 75 so I'd have to try really hard to get lost on this expedition. It also said there would be about 800 feet of climbing and not quite 400 feet of descending. I was thinking it was going to be a bit tough since I haven't really been riding much this year. We had a really wet and cold spring and any good days we had, I felt bad for the dogs so I took them on hiking trips instead of going for a ride.

Most of the ride was pretty good, but there were a couple hills on the way out that gave me a lot of trouble. I persevered and made it to the hash. Crossing the road, I put down my bike so I could walk around for the GPS dance, but I was concerned about the very deep, steep, wet ditch in my way. Fortunately, I was able to get within the margin of error on the HashDroid app for another success (and a Consecutive). You can read the first expedition of the Consecutive chain here. Interestingly, this hash landed next to a Hops Farm. Apparently, Western New York was a huge, national Hops producing region a long time ago but then a blight swept through. Most of the farmers switched over to grapes since they like very similar conditions and we now have a small but thriving wine region. With small breweries opening left and right the last couple years, it seems the hops are starting to be grown again.

The plan was to take it easy on the way back because my legs were starting to feel it, but it turns out the ups going home were far less steep than the ones getting to the hash, so I enjoyed longer and faster downhills and not-as-hard uphill climbs. Before I knew it, I was back home, tired but happy.
