Expedition

On our way back from Rostock to Zingst, I convinced my dad to take short detour for this conveniently placed geohash. It was already dark, so he stayed in the car, which was parked a bit down the road from the path into the forest, while I ventured alone into the nightly woods. I walked 930 m in my phone's light until I reached the hash, which lay literally on the path, despite the forest only having paths every 500 m or so. The GPS was spotty, so I had to hashdance for a while before settling for 70 cm distance, usually below my aspirations. I wanted to take pictures, but unfortunately my phone's battery had fallen to 15% a minute before, below which it refuses to activate flash. I tried to photograph myself anyway, but unsurprisingly it turned out terrible. A little frustrated, I started the journey back, but about halfway the evening stroll turned into a small adventure as my phone switched off its light due to low battery. My eyes adjusted to the new blackness, and to my relief I was just able to make out the path from the very dim light of the sky (the moon stood almost full in the sky, though far from zenith). I walked slower to avoid stumbling over something, and when the trees slowly closed their cover above the path, I had to guess my way forward by the sliver of dark grey that contrasted the sky above the path a little farther on with the blackness of everything else. Luckily, I have quite keen eyes and don't tend to get frightened in such situations, so I made it out of the forest again without veering into the trees or crashing into the vehicle-block gate. I reached the car and we continued on to our destination.
