Expedition

There were reachable hashes on the 2nd and 3rd of January, allowing me to start off the Geohashing year with a bang. On the 2nd, I copied the hash coordinates into Google Maps and cycled the 12.2 km there in the afternoon so I'd be back before dark. I'd considered also going to the Duvenstedter Brook nature reserve, which was only a little further, but decided it was too cold. The hash lay only 13 m outside the grounds of the Biogas- und Kompostwerk Bützberg, a biogas and composting plant operated by the Stadtreinigung Hamburg, Hamburg's main waste management company, and also only 11 m from a path that led along its fence. It drizzled several times on the way there.

I went along the path and located the coordinates next to it in some bushes at the foot of a large bank, atop which stood the fence. I had some trouble getting into the bushes, but ultimately managed to reach the hash from behind. When I opened the Geohash Droid to check my position and record proof, I was confused at first because it showed a different location, until the realisation hit me – I was at the wrong hash! I'd put in tomorrow's coordinates without checking the date! Disaster! Shame (ding ding ding)!

I went back to my bike and considered my options. Could I count this failure as an expedition because I went to the coordinates intending to reach today's hash, similar to how an something counts as an expedition as long as you intend to reach the hash when you set off, no matter what happens later? I don't recall any case like this. The community later said it only counts as an expedition if you go on the correct date because it's defined such that the date is more fundamental than the coordinates to a geohash, and I have to reluctantly agree. Thus, I need to classify this as an accidental retrohash, though I'll use the intention definition for my personal expedition count. Sadly, this means I can't even claim the Blinded by Science consolation prize, since that only applies to expeditions. And even worse (or better?), Radio Yerevan only applies to achievements and not to consolation prizes (though it's unclear whether consolation prizes are not, in fact, also a kind of achievement) – so I'll have to Radio Yerevan Radio Yerevan in this case.

However, I really didn't want to let today's actual geohash go to waste, so I decided (despite it being dark and probably wet on the way back) to cycle the 17 km northward to 2023-01-02 53 10.

Is it true that π π π earned the Radio Yerevan achievement?
In principle, yes.

In principle, yes.
But I accidentally went on the wrong date, not to the wrong coordinates. Also, it was more my own fault than the technology's. (2023-01-03 53 10).

In principle, yes.
But I visited the next day's coordinates by accident, and the rules say this disqualifies it as an expedition, so I can't claim achievements. (2023-01-03 53 10).
