Expedition

The Duvenstedter Brook and Hamburg's northernmost point on land had tempted me for a while, and this hash was just perfect to explore them both, and I had to go to Hamburg anyway. So I first took the bus to Nahe and then cycled 9 km zigzag across the countryside until I reached the hash from the north. It lay on the path to a field in a quite nice location. After taking pictures, I cycled another 1.5 km to Hamburg's extreme north (only the islands of Neuwerk and Scharhörn in the North Sea are further north), which turned out to be just a fence at the edge of a meadow. From there, I cycled to the Duvenstedter Brook, Hamburg's third-biggest and second-oldest nature reserve.

Right on the very first field stood a crane (the bird, that is). Only one field further, I saw a whole flock of them, maybe around twenty. I'd never seen this many of them this close to home, shame I didn't bring my camera. As I cycled deeper into the reserve, I started to see moors next to the path, and finally a deer viewing platform at a big clearing – the Duvenstedter Brook supposedly has Germany's largest deer population. Unfortunately, no deer were visible. After cycling along a forest path that ended in another viewing spot and a sign that bikes were forbidden to continue, I turned back and cycled eastward, out of the reserve. On a huge field, I did manage to get a glimpse of four deer, far away. I reached Bargteheide after 10 km and, still having a bit of time, cycled across a market and bought a pastry. Cycling to the station, I could not find the entrance at first and did have to hurry before finally finding it and arriving at the platform in time. There stood a train that indicated it was going in the other direction, and there were no electronic boards to claim anything else, so I did not enter it. Of course, it turned out to be my train, and I had to wait half an hour for the next one into the city. Stupid mistake, never again.
