Expedition

Took the bus to Nahe and then another bus to near Oering in late afternoon. The bus driver overshot my stop even though I had pressed the button – I had to cycle back one stop and then ride 5 km to the hash. It was very warm, and I had deliberately broken the first rule of geohashing by putting on shorts. The hash lay on a meadow that had recently been harvested, with the grass being pressed into hay bales that were still lying around. To get to it, I had to jump over a small creek, but since it ran in a small ditch with reed on either side, I needed to jump at full speed and capacity (probably the first time in years I've done that). Easily locating the coordinates just 7 m from the creek and 70 m from the path, I was glad they had not fallen in a menacing mound of nettles just 15 m to the east.

I jumped back over the creek and, because I was in such a flow, onto a nearby bale without use of hands. Neat. It was sunny and quiet, and there were no buildings in sight. As I hadn't exercised that much recently, I'd put on a jersey and planned to cycle home speedily as a workout. After consuming a banana, I started off and it worked well with an average speed of almost 30 km/h despite the numerous turns. Going became harder when I had to cycle up Rathkrügen in Kisdorf, the entire region's biggest "mountain", and the badly maintained cycle paths didn't help. I had to stop when my jacket (why had I even brought it?) fell off my rack after a particularly rough section, but was rewarded with blackberries growing on the side of the road. I arrived home after just over half an hour of cycling just under 14 km.
