Expedition

In the morning I cycled to Wrocław Główny. The plan was to take a train to Ścinawa. But I missed it. Luckily, after 20 minutes, there was a train that took me to Żmigród. Therefore, I had to reverse the planned route.

In Żmigród I went west and passed by the Test Track Centre. There was a light-green Stadler FLIRT DMU and a new Polish hybrid DMU. The first half of the route, to Wińsko, was all the time more or less uphill. With strong headwind it felt awful. The situation turned around in Wińsko. Lovely downhills that could last forever. In Gryżyce, I saw two loose dogs 50 meters above me. I decided to check out a never-tried approach. I stopped, the dogs passed me by, and I could continue to cycle.

The geohash turned out to be located on swampy floodplains. Hip-height thistles guarded it. It is an awful environment for a cyclist in shorts and clipless shoes. I tried to continue for a dozen meters, but I surrendered. The closest I could get was 166 meters. Stay safe is the first rule I obey. Ścinawa was only 10 km away and a train home was in less than an hour.

During WWII, Ścinawa was converted into a fortress city by the Nazis. Even the bridge on the Odra River was fortified. There's a tank monument to commemorate the liberation by the Soviets. In Ścinawa I took the train back to the Wrocław Stadion station, which looks like a pile of concrete but won architectural awards, and from there cycled home.
