Expedition

It rained for most of the day, but I wanted to avoid the big downpour forecasted for the evening. After considering taking the train and bus there, which would've taken 15 minutes longer, I instead opted to cycle the entire way with the option to take public transport home if it started raining heavily. It was 10.4 km to the hash, but took longer than expected because some of the paths seemed to consist entirely of puddles and mud. The Alster (yes, that Alster), which I needed to cross in the middle of the Upper Alster Flats nature reserve, had burst its bank and almost completely flooded the bridge. The path on both ends of it, however, lay lower and was covered at least 30 cm deep in water, higher than my pedals were off the ground. I'd been here many times, but had never seen it like this. I tried to avoid completely drenching my feet by taking them off the pedals just before they hit the water, but got stuck in the mud and had to put my left foot on the ground the prevent falling over. After this, I didn't try it again and pushed on through the remaining waterbody, also drenching the lower part of my right foot. New personal record for deepest water cycled through.

When I reached the hashfield, I has relieved to find it had recently been harvested and only contained the bottoms of maize stalks. I located the coordinates 75 m from the road, took pictures and went back to check the times. I could've made the next bus, but wanted to explore a cool-looking mountainbike/motocross track right next to the field and did that instead. It consisted of a former gravel pit with a lake with many narrow criss-crossing paths running through, some down steep banks and cliffs that I didn't dare descend in these conditions and without a helmet. I cycled around the lake and through the adjacent forest, which in its nativeness felt quite unique to me. It seemed to mostly be used for riding horses. After exploring a strange abandoned concrete tower, I discovered some spectacularly bright fungi on a tree next to path, but then had to leave to reach my train in time. Cycling another 20 minutes, including through the entirety of Tangstedt Forest on a forest path, I made it with no time to spare and then cycled home from the station after buying some groceries. Even though it had started to rain near the end, I made it home mostly dry (except for my feet, of course).
