A hash actually directly on the train tracks! This would be a first for me, although I got within 5 m at 2019-08-11 53 9. I had just enough time in the afternoon to go for it, even though it would take longer than my usual 2–2.5 h limit for expeditions. At least I'd be able to be productive on the train, I thought to myself.
The fastest way would be to take the A3 to Elmshorn and then the RE70, which passes over the hash. It doesn't take long to get to Neumünster, but the A1 is so slow that it's faster to get off at Wrist, take the bus to Bad Bramstedt and take the A1 home from there. I did get some work done on the A3, and then walked around a bit in Elmshorn, where I had 20 minutes. When I arrived at the platform, it was already indicated that my train would be late and I'd just miss my bus in Wrist. But it was too late to abort now, and maybe the bus would wait for the passengers from the train.
The RE70 turned out to be delayed by ten minutes instead of five, so I planned to take the next-fastest route back, which was the exact same way I got there. On the train, I carefully prepared my phone, showing the Droid and Maps split-screen and recording it, but just as I approached the hash my location froze for a full minute. When it finally unfroze, we were way past the hash. Bad luck, I thought to myself, but at least I'd have the tracklog saved by Google Maps.
In Wrist (<insert pun here>), I opted not to hurry to look at the mill in the town centre, instead waiting on the platform and listening to the epic finale of my current audiobook. The RB71 arrived and took me back to Elmshorn, taking a full 50% longer than the RE70. Probably because I'd planned to take the bus, it did not occur to me even once that I'd pass over the hash again and get a second chance at recording proof. In order to not mentally have to deal with the ramifications of this gross intellectual failure, I attribute this neglect fully to my mind being occupied with the grand reveals at the end of my mystery novel.
Naturally, I did not get any more work done on the way back.
